She brings into her book many excellent references that support the importance of developing these relationships. Improved relationships lead to better total performance including the safety. As I have been Executive coaching for many years, I have wished someone would write a book on the subject of relationships that actually addressed the core issues. This book is backed by non-negotiable science. It addresses all aspects of human development and self-actualization through our biological need for authentic relationships. If ever there was a critical path through the organizational transformation phenomenon, this book, for me, has nailed it. I just wish I could have handed it to every senior leader I have worked with over the last two decades and said "Just do this." Highly recommended. You can't have a conversation, no matter how technical, without that relational dynamic also playing out. And if you don't pay explicit attention to it, if you don't thoughtfully and mindfully manage it, your conversations will be diminished. People will not share their observations, concerns or new ideas. Safety (and all other dimensions of performance) will suffer. Jo -- Fantastic book that emphasizes the need for human interaction and meaningful communication. : In my opinion, the most significant message pointed out in the book is the vital role that trust plays in the workplace and in the supervisor/employee relationship. Rosa's research confirmed, in my mind, in the need for frequent communication and a personal relationship between the supervisor and employee or manager and direct report. I think that finding the balance between a professional relationship and personal friendship is a challenge though. I expect that supervisors that develop a personal friendship with a direct report may not be able to easily make a tough business decision, like a termination or discipline, or provide negative feedback to a subordinate if boundaries are not set. It is really well written, easy to read and broken down into sections that quickly facilitate a grasp of the key components. It is a fascinating insight into the importance of building and sustaining effective relationships to nurture great safety performance. It deals with the psychology and the neuroscience that explain the power of relationships, but it is also a practical guide illustrated with great examples from the author's own case studies and field work.
